❗During the blessed month of Ramadhaan classes will run from 5pm – 6pm

Hifz classes will continue as normal till 20 minutes before Iftar

Second shift students will have class from 6pm – 7pm from Monday 27th March and classes will be closed on 23rd and 24th of March.

This is advice to my brothers and sisters as much as it is a reminder for myself as a father and teacher.

I have found myself falling into the trap of yelling and I know some of you may struggle with this as well. In my early years as a teacher, I probably yelled every day!

It is important to understand why yelling is an ineffective way to solve discipline problems in the classroom. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why:

1️⃣ Creates negative emotions

You may say yelling was how my teacher managed misbehaviour. But you have to ask yourself; how does it make a student feel? Embarrassment, belittlement, and resentment are just some of the negative emotions that can arise. Is it a risk worth taking?

2️⃣ Children follow what we do, and not what we say.

Our actions as teachers should reflect the noble Sunnah and what we do will be modeled by our students. It is important to demonstrate self-control and maintain a calm demeanour, even during times of stress or conflict.

3️⃣ Students will become immune to your yelling

A teacher should always have a positive and cheerful demeanor, so when we are upset or annoyed, the students know something is wrong. Similarly, if we start yelling, the students will become immune to our regular voice and will no longer take us seriously.

4️⃣ Loss of Respect

Research shows that when children are raised by authoritarian parents who use forceful and punitive methods, including yelling, they are less likely to view their parents as authority figures.

“Had you been harsh and hard hearted, they would have dispersed from around you.”

Qur’an 3:159

It is the opinion of Imaam Abu Yusuf that an Ustaadh should treat his students with such love and kindness that an observer would think that these are the Ustaadh’s own children. He has also mentioned that especially in gatherings of ilm one should avoid displaying anger (Taken from Adabul Mu’allimeen)

Yelling, even if it is not done in anger, has a negative impact on the atmosphere in the classroom and can cause everyone including other teachers and students to become nervous.

This is my humble opinion on the topic and insha Allah I will follow it up with strategies we can use to help us manage our classroom better.
